Why Slut-Shaming Is Bad ?

Starting at a young age, girls are taught to not dress in a provocative way. They're told that they shouldn't act a certain way or boys will get the wrong idea. This starts in middle school. "This" being the pressure girls undergo to impress guys. This sort of "you need to make sure guys notice you, but don't be too revealing" situation. It's the start of the great internal debate, the argument girls have with themselves every day: "I don't want to be a prude, but I don't want to be a slut. What do I wear today?"

So, it starts in middle school. After years of not worrying about what we're wearing or if our make-up looks good or not, we are now seeing those are the most important things in our lives. Suddenly, there's a dress code, and I can't show my shoulders and my shorts are too short and my shirt is too low cut. It starts when you're sent out of class to change, sometimes even sent home because now boys are suddenly distracted by what you're wearing. This is really when girls starting being mean to one another. When girls start slut shaming other girls, or when girls won't hang out with other girls because they don't own any mini skirts.

Boys might do it consciously, they might do it unconsciously, it doesn't matter, but they tend to shame girls who sleep around. Then make fun of girls who don't. Now, you're a slut for saying yes and a bitch for saying no. Between girls hating on girls, boys hating on girls, and society hating on girls, there's no winning for girls. It's pretty unfair when girls are constantly under the microscope while boys are practically praised for how many people they sleep with.

I've seen frat boys collect shirts from all the girls they've slept with, I've seen hazing begin with sleeping with girls. The more woman men sleep with, the more respect they earn in their group. It's an obnoxiously obvious double standard. The way girls are raised, it's to accommodate men's needs. Nobody ever tells guys to "cover up".

Maybe it's time for society to stop telling women to cover up. Maybe it's time to stop slut shaming. I'm tired of hearing about women hating women. I'm tired of hearing about men hating women. All just because of what they wear. It's a judgmental society, and people are going to judge others on what they're wearing. And I know there's a difference between being professional and unprofessional, but there's no reason to call women sluts because they like to have sex. Men are honored for it, women shouldn't be shamed. On the flip-side, women also shouldn't be prudes because they won't have sex. Society should just stop judging women altogether. Let them wear what they want, let them have sex as often as they want. As long as they're being safe, as long as there isn't a negative impact on anybody else, what's the harm? So, leave women alone. Let them do what they want. They're no sluts, and they're not prudes. They can say no if they want. Stop pitting everyone against each other.
